from performer to designer
PRODUCTION DESIGN & SCENIC DESIGN
I build worlds for film, theatre, dance, opera, and contemporary circus, working with scripted narratives as well as experimental and devised projects.
I was born on the Fourth of July and raised in upstate NY. Like all good stories, my artistic career began when I dropped out of college to run away with the circus and become a trapeze artist. I quickly found a home in the contemporary circus hub of Montreal, Quebec and spent the next decade performing internationally on various stages: cruise ships, dinner theatres, stadiums, fringe festivals, spiegeltent varieties, tv, and under the big top of Cirque du Soleil.
I've always been in search of the sublime, voraciously globetrotting and chasing the rare and transcendental moments of which the richest inspiration can be derived. I fell in love with trapeze for two reasons: the feeling of soaring while viewing the world from upside down, and the precious fleeting exchange between a performer and live audience. Both are magical to me still. I strive to incorporate a sense of wonder and unexpectedly upside-down perspectives in my work.
In my art I am restless and habitually exploring new avenues. Challenging myself is my favourite game. And I believe in striving to make play and work synonymous. I love stories with deep emotional resonance, quirky outsider characters, and I take particular care to consider the immense power of light in my designs. I like dark chocolate and the sound of rain.
